Here’s how those work: You can choose either cereal or toast for your breakfast. My friend’s car is neither green nor brown. Either is used in the affirmative sense, when you’re presenting possibilities that are both true or valid. Neither is used in the negative sense, when you’re presenting things that aren’t true or valid. So far, so straightforward – but you might have some questions about using â€Å"either or† and â€Å"neither nor† correctly. What About â€Å"Neither Or†? You may well have come across sentences like these: I’m neither angry or upset. This isn’t grammatically correct. The sentence should be rewritten as I’m neither angry nor upset. However, using â€Å"neither nor† can sound unduly formal or even a little archaic. External and Competitive Environment for tourism Industry - Essay Example Tourism Industry Total receipts from tourism are 9% of the world GDP and the tourist industry employs 2.8% of the total world population (Quick Facts, 2010). The Tenerife economy is greatly reliant on the tourism industry. The service sector of the economy contributes 79.4% to the GDP where hostelry comprises of 14.29% of the total of the tourism industry of the Canary Islands (Economic Sector, 2005). It is approximated that 10 million tourists visit the Canary Islands which includes 5 million tourists every year in Tenerife alone (Osborne). It was once viewed that more tourists meant more money in the industry but now a new concept have revealed (Osborne). The Tenerife Industry is focusing more upon quality of the services provided rather than increasing their sales (Osborne). This is mainly due to the realization that tourists enjoy quality vacation and are ready to pay higher amounts to stay in â€Å"good quality† four and five star hotels (Osborne). The volcanic eruption i n Iceland in 2010 carved a caricature of the Tourism Industry in Europe. Initially, the volcano eruption rose excitement among the tourists and they went on to Iceland to have a look at the natural catastrophic eruption. However, later the danger aggravated and not only the tourism industry of Iceland but of the whole Europe was messed up. ... nge and Europe might not experience summer which would then result in the loss of tourism revenues from countries like Switzerland, France and Italy (Gupta, 2010). Thus, the tourism industry all over the Europe seems to face the trickle down effects of the volcanic eruption in the region. Objectives The video demonstrated a situation of the tourism industry in Tenerife and the effects after the volcanic eruption. The tourist Nigel experienced the whole situation in a hotel and came up to the conclusion that he liked the hotel whereas, he was unsatisfied with the services if Ryan Airways through which he was flying. This was utterly due to the different behavior adopted by both the organizations. The hotel was hospitable and accommodating whereas, he faced the opposite reaction from the Airways and was in a complete dismal. Thus, the focus of the report is to investigate the reasons for the two distinguished reactions of the organizations that were going through the same natural circu mstances. Both the organizations are an integral part of the tourism industry, yet they resulted in different attitudes. Therefore, further analysis would seek to clarify. Spain PEST Analysis Since the Canary Islands are a province of Spain the PEST analysis would enhance the analysis. Political Analysis Spain has a mixed capitalist economy and ranks as the 12th largest in the world. The political conditions are somewhat stable and hence, the economy has been successful until 2007 when the effects of recession began to be felt in 2007 (World Factbook, 2010). Economic Analysis Real GDP growth decreased in 2007 in the wake of recession by 3.9% and later in 2010 by 0.2%. History and Theory The world is full of magical realism. Magical Realism may just become a word that people thought of in the 1930's; however, magical realism has been here for as long as the people have been able to tell and write stories. Whether the stories are true or made up, they are all magical realism. The first author who started associating the words of magical realism to out was a German art critic, by the name of Franz Roh. Roh considered magical realism an art category. It represented and responded to reality and depicted the enigmas of reality. In Latin America in the 1940's, magical realism was a way to express the realistic American mentality and create an autonomous style of literature. One feature of magical realism is ironic distance from the magical worldview should not compromise reality. The writer should strongly respect the magic or else the magic would go into folk belief or complete fantasy and split from the term of magic that relates it to Angel Flores (111). Authorial reticence another feature of magical realism, refers to the lack of clear opinions of the accuracy of events of the worldviews expressed by the characters in the stories. This technique promotes acceptance in magical realism. The simple fact of explaining the supernatural worldview can be part of reality (Wendy Faris, 165). Magical Realism can be art, poetry, and literature. Gabriel Garcia Marquez was linked to the style of literature known as magical realism. Literature is only one type of magical realism that is expressed wildely. Aligning Action and Values Article Critique Essay

In the article ‘Aligning Action and Values’ article by Jim Collins, a very pertinent point is made that is applicable in today’s business environment. Organizations spend very little time aligning daily work with the overall vision and core values set by the organization. Collins’ article was written 10 years ago, but the content currently still has merit. Organizations are constantly changing and adapting to industry and environmental trends. With the explosion of the Internet and rapid global expansion, company’s need to have efficient change management programs and vision to keep the organization on track. Too often, companies are sidelined by managers that are self-promoting and not working for the overall vision of the company. Yet, this is not necessarily a middle manager problem, but a problem of the company not identifying and pursuing the grand vision the company was founded to achieve. Mr. Collins points out the often company’s are either to busy trying to repeatedly craft the perfect vision statement or the organization has not spent any time aligning the organization with the values that have been determined. Truly visionary organizations are able to use core values become efficient in management and operations to keep the company moving forward. Organizations that do not align goals with values spend more time evaluating past problems and too little time focusing on the future. Jim Collins is correct in that one must first identify the internal dialogue to identify organizational misalignments. There is typically mistrust between senior leaders and employees in terms of who is doing the right things. Senior leaders need to listen to lower level managers and employees and take into consideration the perspective of those that directly link to the customer. Senior leaders also need to determine what is said in the organization’s undercurrent internal dialogue. What often drives employees to perform is what is felt unconsciously, not what is stated in official forums. Company’s that have alignment of goals with vision are able to determine the internal dialogue and keep the dialogue positive. Identifying the difference between core values and strategies is essential for organizational alignment. Mr. Collins points out that core values should be timeless and never change. What should change are operational practices and strategies. Many companies too often are constantly identifying new core values, and this makes focus difficult. By identifying permanent core value, employees are able to always rely on what the greater purpose of the company should represent in all daily operations. Without this concrete focus, employees become disgruntled and unable to focus on any one thing, increasing inefficiencies. Mr. Collins also posits that organizations cannot â€Å". . . nstall new core values into people. . . † but that people are predisposed to holding them. Therefore, the key is to find people that are already predisposed to holding the company’s particular values. This concept is especially hard for organizations that are attempting to align actions to values. People are inherently resistant to change and any change in an organization’s core values will be difficult for all employees to embrace. Therefore, it is crucial that organizations identify core values at inception so that all employees will identify with the goals and vision when hired. Otherwise it is exceptionally difficult to implement change management strategies to get employees to ‘buy in’ to new values. In all, Jim Collins is accurate on his assessment of aligning action and values in organizations. Although this article was written 10 years ago, companies still struggle with these concepts today. Mr. Collins is correct that organizations need to have permanent core values, identify internal dialogues and act on inconsistencies, and hire people that are predisposed to a particular organizations core values, instead of attempting to gain ‘buy in’ from current employees.
